How to Play Dots & Squares

The grid starts with dots arranged in rows and columns. Players take turns drawing one line between two adjacent dots.

  • Click a gap between two dots to draw a line in your color.
  • Complete a box by drawing its fourth side — you claim it and get an extra turn.
  • Chain captures — if multiple boxes are completed in one turn, you score all of them and keep going.
  • Game ends when all boxes are filled. Highest score wins!

Dots & Squares Strategy Tips

  • Avoid 3-sided boxes — drawing a third edge on a box hands your opponent a free point.
  • Count the chains — late-game, force opponents to open long chains of boxes for you to sweep.
  • Sacrifice small — sometimes giving up 1–2 boxes to force a longer chain is worth it.
  • Watch the corners — boxes in corners and edges have fewer adjacencies; often safer to play near them early.

Dots & Squares Rules

  • 5×5 dot grid — 16 boxes to claim
  • Players alternate drawing one horizontal or vertical line per turn
  • Completing the fourth side of a box claims it for that player (+1 point)
  • Claiming a box grants an immediate extra turn
  • The game ends when all boxes are claimed
  • Player with the most boxes wins; ties are possible
