How to Play Checkers
Checkers (also called Draughts) is played on the dark squares of an 8×8 board. Each player starts with 12 pieces. The goal is to capture all of your opponent's pieces, or leave them with no legal moves.
- Click or tap a piece to select it — valid moves will highlight green.
- Tap the destination to move your piece.
- Pieces can only move diagonally forward.
- Capturing is mandatory when possible.
- Reach the far row to become a King — Kings can move in any diagonal direction.
- Chain captures are allowed and must be continued if available.
Checkers Rules (American/English)
We implement the standard American/English Checkers ruleset:
- 8×8 board, dark squares only
- Mandatory capture — if a jump is available, you must take it
- Multi-jump — continue jumping if further captures are possible after landing
- King promotion — promote upon reaching the opponent's back row
- Win by capturing all pieces or blocking all opponent moves
Checkers Strategy Tips
- Control the center — central pieces are more flexible and harder to capture.
- Keep your back row — pieces on your back row prevent the opponent from easily promoting.
- King fast — promoting pieces to Kings gives a major mobility advantage.
- Trade wisely — equal trades are fine; avoid leaving pieces undefended.
- Force mandatory captures — set up sequences where your opponent must capture into a losing position.
